California Dream takes you into the seaside world of California surfers in the 1960s, a high point of the American dream before it shattered in the face of rising racial tensions and the radicalization of protest movements. The photographs of François Fontaine interpret the films and documentaries devoted to surfing whose sources fashioned the legend. Thus revisited, their images gain in intensity, awakening their symbolism and timelessness. The acidulated colors suggest the Technicolor of the era and David Hockney's brightly colored Pop Art paintings. The fuzzy focus places the photos on a pictorial plane evoking Seurat and Hopper. Sea, sex and sun.
